Welcome.
I’m Yvonne Chiana.

I’ve lived long enough, worked hard enough, and seen enough of life to know that some of the most important conversations are the ones we’re often reluctant to have.
I was born in London, spent my childhood and part of adulthood in Nigeria, and eventually made my home in the United States.
Along the way, I’ve experienced different cultures, witnessed societies change, and learned that the world often looks very different depending on where you’re standing.
My professional journey has been equally varied. I earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in microbiology before eventually retraining as a nurse in America.
For nearly three decades, nursing has given me a front-row seat to some of life’s most vulnerable, difficult, and deeply human moments. My years in hospice care, in particular, have profoundly shaped how I think about dignity, compassion, aging, family, faith, and what truly matters.
But I’m much more than my professional background. I’m a woman with opinions, questions, memories, convictions, and an enduring curiosity about the world around me.
I care about Africa and its diaspora, the challenges facing Nigeria, the changing values of our societies, faith, relationships, and the complicated business of being human.
Yvonne Chiana – Commentary & Perspectives is my space to explore those subjects openly and thoughtfully.
You won’t always agree with me, and that’s perfectly fine. I’m not here to tell everyone what to think.
I’m here to share what I think, explain why, and invite meaningful conversations along the way.
Some articles will be deeply personal. Others will question familiar assumptions, examine uncomfortable realities, or reflect on the lessons that only time and experience can teach.
What connects them all is a belief that our experiences matter, our perspectives deserve to be heard, and it’s never too late to contribute something meaningful to the conversation.
Thank you for visiting. I hope you’ll stay, read, reflect, and occasionally join the conversation.
